After many months of collaboration with the Morning Star Academy we felt that something more could have been done. With the good relations that we built with the school, we proposed the installation of a moringa dryer in the school.

Moringa is gaining more and more notoriety in the world as a super food. It is a plant with many properties and uses, but is especially known for having high nutritional content in the leaves.

Luckily, a lot of moringa plants are farmed in Kilifi but not very well recognised for their nutritional value. They are mostly cooked in a stew where most of the vitamins would get lost. We researched designs and decided to build what turned out to be a very functional solar dryer that was producing enough moringa to feed 200 school kids every day for five days a week.

Once finished, tested and tasted, we delivered the moringa dryer to the school where we had four days of presentations to explain properly to each class the benefits and how to recognise the plant. We had games and moringa hunting expeditions in the village involving the local community and parents of the kids and got them to donate two branches every two days to the school for drying.

Each child received a spoonful of dried moringa powder a day, the recommended amount, to enhance and provide a healthier diet with their lunch.It was a long project that gave us and the community a lot of satisfaction, especially knowing that it is still running and supporting the diet of the school kids.
