When we reached the historical town of Lamu, instead of creating our own project we decided to support an existing one – a primary Montessori school set up by a Lamunian and built completely out of recycled glass bottles.

For several months we were involved with co-teaching activities, helping the teacher with the Montessori philosophies. During our visit to the school we noticed that hygiene could be improved with the use of a sink so that the kids attending could wash their hands in running water instead of the same basin.

We installed two sinks, also made from upcycled materials, powered by a foot pump so as not to waste water. It was well received and the kids once they got used to the new foot pump system, really enjoyed using it.

We were also offered to help in building a playground, which we gladly accepted. We built it around an old Lamu sailing boat. It was a perfect starting point for a mix of creativity and tradition that the Musafir could be involved in.
