When we reached the historical town of Lamu, instead of creating our own project we decided to support an existing one – a primary Montessori school set up by a Lamunian and built completely out of recycled glass bottles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For several months we were involved with co-teaching activities, helping the teacher with the Montessori philosophies. During our visit to the school we noticed that hygiene could be improved with the use of a sink so that the kids attending could wash their hands in running water instead of the same basin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We installed two sinks, also made from upcycled materials, powered by a foot pump so as not to waste water. It was well received and the kids once they got used to the new foot pump system, really enjoyed using it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were also offered to help in building a playground, which we gladly accepted. We built it around an old Lamu sailing boat. It was a perfect starting point for a mix of creativity and tradition that the Musafir could be involved in.
